U. C. Berkeley

Our largest and most prominent project to date, the Hargrove Music Library combined a unique design with a technically challenging engineering slate application. The project architects sought to alter the rhythm of the slate’s pattern without appearing random, all while connecting gracefully around large windows and subtle angles in the building’s shape.

Our crew collaborated with the project architects to create a unique implementation on a large scale. Using premium, unfading Vermont gray/green slate, CFS used pieces of material cut to 15 5/8” square with 2” clips on the right and left sides. Each piece of slate was laid at an 11-degree angle with a 4” side lap and 2” head lap. All pieces were laid onto separate panels on the building, separated by aluminum flashing.

The final product is unmatched in its intricacy and quality, all completed on time and within the project budget.
